Samples of cover crop leaves were taken prior to the cash crop growing season at Star Route Farms, a working organic farm located in Marin County, California. In this study, we are trying to assess the pathogenicity of different fungal strains in the genus Alternaria (Deuteromycetes) to see if they are pathogens or endophytes (fungi that do not cause disease in their host). Research over the past decade has discovered that leaf microbial communities are very diverse, and how some of these naturally occurring species can act as protection against pathogens.
